002 Pursuing Discomfort
This week, I’m embarking on a six day expedition with four friends to summit Mt. Olympus on the Olympic peninsula of Washington state. Together, our route involves an 18-mile hike in, glacier traverse, a climb to the summit and a 30 mile raft ride out to the ocean.
Going into this trip, I’ve felt a little uncomfortable at the sheer scale of physical stamina and endurance I’ll need to channel for this. On top of that, I am the least experienced climber in the group and have never traversed across a glacier. But fortunately, I have a great group of friends and outdoorsmen alongside me. I’m not worried or scared, rather curious on how I will manage and feel throughout the journey - mentally and physically.
I’ve always been fond of the idea of backpacking because everything you need to survive and explore — tent, food, clothes, tools, navigation, emergency aid, etc — is carried on your back. You enter a fully nomadic state for a few days and something feels so natural about it all. Disconnecting to connect.
And a few days in the mountains is always good for the soul!

Area of thought to consider
Pursuit of Discomfort
When we find ourselves in an uncomfortable circumstance, we also find ourselves at an opportunity for growth.
Be open to being uncomfortable. Build up your tolerance to discomfort.
Knowing the Wrong Way to Know the Right Way
Have you ever felt like you took a wrong turn? Or failed? Or messed it all up? Did something the ‘wrong way’ to what you originally had in mind?
More often than not when feeling this way, I’ve realized experiencing this is what allows me to better understand the ‘right way.’
Sometimes knowing which way not to go provides more clarity on the best way forward.
Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong - it’s all progress.
Quote to ponder
To travel is to be alive, but to get somewhere is to be dead for as our own proverb says, “To travel well is better than to arrive” — Alan Watts, The Way of Zen
Something to try
Write an intention down for your day shortly after you wake.
Check in with it at least two times throughout the day.
